It took me a few days to troubleshoot, but I finally found that the USB ports on this dongle have been disabled. In addition to using this dongle for Ethernet, I use one of the USB ports with a wireless mouse adapter. During the day, the mouse twitches and sometimes freezes for 5 or more seconds. Changed the battery in the mouse. I plugged the adapter into a different USB port. I switched to a different wireless mouse. I even switched to a wired USB mouse. All scripts caused the same problem. I thought it might be an issue with the macOS software or even the MacBook itself (although it's brand new). But then I bought another USB-C to USB dongle and moved the WiFi adapter to the new dongle. After that I didn't have a single mouse pausing problem. This lention key is still used for Ethernet, but beware of USB connections.
