If you're tired of measuring irregular angles or shapes with pencil and paper and then carving wood or, worse, just evaluating, it's time to move on to a contour gauge (also called profile or form caliber). This tool is very easy to use and provides amazingly accurate measurements. With it you can measure an uneven surface or angle and easily trace it on the wood, tile, plastic or metal to be cut. It is 10 inches long so you can measure short and wide areas. The teeth are about 1/16 inch wide so you can be pretty accurate with your measurements. If you need a contour gauge longer than 10 inches, you can get more than one and chain them together. This special jig is a little expensive, but the quality is good enough, not only for DIY, but also for DIY and carpentry.
