Review on X ACTO Pencil Sharpener Electric Shavings by Nicole Mcleod

Revainrating 4 out of 5

An artist's dream - you can draw with crayons, pastels and even charcoal - WITH PRECAUTIONS

This sharpener has completely changed my game because it only sharpens he can sharpen my colored pencils, even my pastel and charcoal pencils (!) with some care. I've tried everything from hand sharpening with an X-Acto knife to a million different hand sharpeners (including that crazy $100 hut - ugh) and nothing sharpens them as easily and consistently as this one. : This review is specifically about using this sharpener with artistic pencils, which frankly the sharpener doesn't claim to work with (but then what kind of sharpener will work?). *** The most important thing is to be gentle. Try to put the pencil in an appropriately sized hole so it fits in as straight/centered as possible. I would like). If you apply pressure, especially with a pastel, charcoal, or very thick pencil, the tip is likely to break off. And when that happens, there's a good chance the sharpener will clog, rendering it completely useless (UGH). That said, the sharpener still works and appears to work, but it doesn't leave a dent in a pen you put in, which can make you feel like you're going insane. PLUS, you've just lost a large chunk of an expensive pencil! It happens to me about once a month, and when it's happened in the past I've been able to clean it, but only after pulling out a screwdriver to take the pencil apart. sharpener (obviously after unplugging!) and inserting a paperclip in and out, in and out, and turning the little internal sharpening mechanism by hand - trying to find and clean the sharpener. It's slow and tedious, and you can't tell exactly when it's fixed other than reassembling it, reconnecting it, and trying again. This time (about the 6th time) I was only able to partially get it back, but it almost didn't work. I'm not sure I didn't manage to remove it completely (it's deceptively hard to tell if it's clogged or not!) So. I'm buying 2 more (so I'll have the 2nd on hand if he clogs again while I'm making art so I don't have to stop in the middle!). It's cheap enough (compared to the cost of art supplies) that I've just admitted that if I have to buy a new one every few months, it's worth it. Or maybe I'll get better at some point and stop clogging it up (or is it better to clean it up quickly?!). Definitely – it may not sound like it, but I seriously recommend it to artists who work with different types of pens, as despite all the effort, it's still way better than all the alternatives I've found! Just. Maybe 2 of these if you can afford it.

Pros
  • Unbreakable sharpener creates precise points to reduce lead breakage and class frustration
Cons
  • Big and bulky
