This appliance does exactly what it was designed to do. Do you need it? It depends on you. The machine comes with a small round drip tray/cup to catch drips and on top of this drip tray/cup I put a lid on a bottle of detergent to collect drips. The detergent cup still gets sticky/dirty and somehow the tray/cup gets sticky too, even though the detergent never spilled on the tray/cup. To be honest, this device is optional. If you don't want to lift the large detergent bottle, you can tip it on its side and pour the detergent directly into the machine chute through the bottle spout. and then tip the detergent bottle upright again (and you don't have to worry about drips when not in use).
