Review on πŸ” Zyxel GS1200-8 8-Port Gigabit Web Managed Switch by Adam Nelson

Good switch at a great price

I've only had this product for a few days and I like it so far. It does exactly what I need to manage my personal ESXi media server and file server at home. Supports IPv4 and IPv6, LAG ports (to connect a file server to a media server with a 2 Gbps LAG group), limited to 32 Vlans, which is quite enough (not that a simple home network has more than half a dozen would need) This allows traffic from the file server to the media server to never leave the switch and remain separate from other traffic. Experiment with the VLAN tagging features to see if there is a way to support more than one VLAN ID per switch port, as the WebGUI is not very clear on how the VLAN tagging feature works. Now for the bad. The minor issue I found is that there doesn't seem to be a function here that would force the link to fill to 1000. It can be set to auto, 10, or 100 full, but the 1000 full option isn't available (of course, any device that supports a total of 1000 will auto-negotiate that rate, but that looks like a mistake). The user interface also only seems to accept simple alphanumeric characters (A through Z, lowercase and uppercase letters, and 0 through 9), but no special characters at all. My main concern is that the control's WebGUI seems to be only accessible via http and doesn't seem to support https or any form of network traffic encryption. I haven't found any firmware version yet (although there may be) that supports https (I'd be very happy even with a self-signed certificate). That would be the only reason I would give this item 4 stars (I would honestly give it a 4.5 if it were possible) rather than giving it a 5 star rating. All things considered, none of these relatively minor issues would have been a deal breaker. or cause major security issues for a small home network. The Switch does what it promises and does it well. Definitely a great buy.
