I don't quite understand

Maybe I didn't break them enough, but they ruined my edges more than they were of any use. I can get my blades to a screaming edge with a 12k finish belt, but once I run through the first my blades dull noticeably and it's more like abrasive belt. However, using the same technique, pressure, and speed when using third-party leather straps improves the selvage, so I don't think the overall technique is to blame.
