Soldering started with a Rat Shack starter kit. Since then I have upgraded soldering irons several times as I have become more serious about soldering. I decided I should try professional lead free solder and I went for it. It's supposed to have a lower melting point than the tin-copper solder sold at the Rat Shack, but I couldn't tell any difference. A special flux core cleans worse than normal rosin. The last thing that decided his fate was that the special flux smelled like urea, well, urine, instead of the pleasant needle smell of the rosin core. I just bought another spool of Rat Shack solder.
