Review on Cafe Brew PO108 8 Cup Pour-Over Coffee Maker with Permanent Filter - 40 oz, Black by Tara Gardner

Exactly what I wanted

1st for the review! :) I wanted a 40 ounce coffee maker similar to the 8 cup Chemex to be used in combination with the Bonavita BV1800 8 cup glass carafe coffee maker. The reason I didn't choose Chemex is because of its height. The Bonavita model I chose includes a heating plate which takes up extra space. The distance between its heater plate (bottom) and showerhead (top) is 9 inches, and that's not counting the fact that the center of the heater plate (where the glass carafe sits) is slightly recessed. The manufacturer's product page for the 8-cup Chemex lists it as 9 1/8 inches tall, while this item's height lists it as 9 inches. Some user reviews say an 8 cup Chemex can fit if the shower head is raised slightly, but I wanted a cast glass carafe that was easy to install with no intervention. I bought this product with this hope and it works great. There is enough clearance for the glass to slide over the Bonavita heating plate and when in the center recess there is good clearance between the top of the glass and the shower head. If treated with care, the glass will never come into contact with the shower head. On the subject itself. Pros: * Genuine/proprietary "DURAN” borosilicate glass from Germany. It's as if "PYREX" was said, but the glass quality "Pyrex" no longer makes for household glass; Now they only sell this type of glass for scientific laboratory equipment (beakers, etc.). * Silicone holders are ideal. Attractive and functional. They work very well and are easy to remove as they are held in place by two buttons. * The capacity (40 oz) is exactly the same as the decanter it replaces. * The shape makes it easy to clean (brush stick). Other comparable products tend to be rounder (as if they were blown glass), resulting in more difficult-to-clean areas. It's not that thin that I'm concerned it might break with normal use. This is a very good compromise between price and quality. I'd be happy to pay a little more for a heavier product. Of course, my use case is unusual and that's what put me off buying Chemex. * I just brewed my first 8 cup coffee with this combo: Bonavita BV1800 + Cafe Brew PO108 + reusable filter that comes with PO108. I measured 8 grams of coffee per cup. Only 64 grams. The end result was very good. * I have a much better quality reusable filter (Osaka "To-ji") that will arrive tomorrow. From what I've read on the subject, the filter can make a huge difference in the quality of your coffee. Chemex makes exceptional paper filters and this reusable Osaka filter is considered a great replacement. I look forward to a taste comparison.
