At first I used one of these to hold my screen in place when it ripped until I could fix it. Since then I've always installed it and they have rescued my phone several times, the protection can break but the screen underneath has been fine. The first time it was a bit fiddly to install and worry about every speck of dust, but the second (and third and fourth) time it was a lot easier. Removing a cracked screen protector is easy, and the installation kit includes wipes and a microfiber cloth so you can easily clean any remaining broken glass.
