I read so much about the complexity of programming this scanner that I almost bought it. I'm glad I didn't, this scanner is amazing, probably the best I've ever had. To get the most out of this scanner, follow these steps.1. Get a radio reference account. It has all available frequencies in USA.2. Download a trial version of the Butel ARC500 software. I bought mine but you can get started with the trial version. You can use all functions for 30 days. That's more than enough time to program and personalize your ws1040.3. Buy good batteries. I'm using Duracell batteries, they seem fine.4. And most importantly, go to YouTube and search for ScannerMaster Radio Shack Scanner Programming Videos 1, 2 and 3. It walks you through the software, yes it's for a different scanner, but the setting is for the software and it applies to any scanner with the ARC 500 software. After watching the video, the software and programming really made sense. Programming this scanner seemed very difficult to be honest until I watched these videos, it really is a lot easier than you think. Prior to this scanner I have never used a scanner that required software to program, all scanners I have had in the past have been manually programmed on the scanner. I just bought the latest version of Police Call from Radio Shack and dialed in the frequencies I wanted to listen to. With programmable scanners, a radio reference, and software available, tuning frequencies is now easier and faster than ever. It took me 15 minutes to install over 800 frequencies including installing the software on my computer. Now about the scanner, it's amazing! I like scan lists compared to the old banks my previous scanners had. I've created lists based on my community, nearby communities, my county, local airports, national parks, CalFire, railroads, and a scan list of emergency frequencies like Red Cross, Weather, FEMA, and more. I assigned an LED color to each agency and set the LED to flash and turn on the backlight when the priority frequency is active. There are so many ways to customize this scanner to your personal taste that you will never get bored. If I can program and set up this scanner the way I want it, anyone can. Don't let other negative programming reviews put you off buying this scanner. If you do, you're missing out on an incredible scanner.
