I bought a Cable Matters USB3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Network Adapter and it worked great for Windows 10 and I thought , it could work for 2012R2. I contacted cable issues and they said it would work. It's not like this. I looked at this Star Tech USB3.0 to Dual Port Gigabit and it also said it would work for Windows 10 but didn't say it would work for Server 2012R2. I left a message for Star Tech and they said it would work so I bought it. I got it today and hooked it up to my 2012R2 server and it worked without using a hard drive. The system found the driver and installed it automatically. I ran a network speed test on a Stellar Tech USB 30 to Ethernet versus a Gigabit network connection to the internet via Comcast and got the same connection speed on both. The only downside is the size of the adapter as you need space for two network ports.
