Review on Gitzo GS3321SP Systematic Flat Top Plate: a Must-Have for Series 2, 3 and 4 Tripods (Black) by Claudia Phipps

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works better than the original but needs a longer set screw.

Despite another review saying it didn't fit the Series 3, I installed it today on a Series 3 Systematic 3541XLS and it fitted perfectly. However, there is a downside. This means the grub screw is very short, and although it makes contact with the underside of the Arca Swiss Z1 pan head, it simply pushes the head up and away from the non-slip rubber that sits atop the flat top plate. The only solution I see is to drill a hole in the base of the Z1 cone head and put in a longer set screw. This creates an attachment point that prevents the head, camera and lenses from unwinding. A combination of camera lenses can provide a lot of head torque, especially if you want to hoist a tripod without removing the lens to walk around in place. Using an old Series 3 Systematic I bought ten years ago, the 170-200mm lens flipped around and hit me in the shoulder. Totally unexpected. A heavier lens definitely won't be held on a 3/8 post without modification, a longer grub command, and maybe a bit of threadlock to keep it connected for the ages. It's better than getting hit in the head, or worse, it will completely unscrew and drop the camera and lens.
