Review on Riverstone Audio Stabilizer Anodized Aluminum by Rushabh Bear

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very good record weight, great price, good case. However, I'm not sure if this (or adding weight to the record) improves the sound quality.

Compared to the highly acclaimed Pro-Ject record puck I tried, this one is about half the price and just as good. Sometimes even better. The Pro-Ject washer weighs about 2 pounds. I'm not comfortable with this weight. The Riverstone Jazz weighs 13 ounces, which feels just right—heavy enough to hold a record firmly on the platter, but not so heavy that it puts a strain on the motor. the typical silver or black color that comes with most pucks/plate clips. The shell is good. It's articulated and there's a small hook on the front so you can snap it on. In contrast, the upper and lower halves of the Pro-Ject housing are not connected and the housing cannot be closed securely. Not really a big deal unless you want to move it. Then you need to wrap the whole thing with a rubber band to keep it from falling apart. There are two possible downsides to consider before buying: Vinyl record playback. It is no problem for me; I usually play records with the dust cover open or just take it off. If you want, measure the height between the plate and the dust cover. You will need 1.5" of clearance to be able to close the dust cover with the vinyl record and this washer on the platter. Second, you should lower your expectations for sound quality benefits. I think there is a serious placebo effect in the audiophile community as those of us with disposable incomes hunt down every possible source for even a small improvement in sound quality. In theory, it seems plausible that a strong board-to-board connection can only help. And that weight isn't cheap at all (Pro-Ject is $85 and I've seen plenty of them for $150 and up). So there's no harm in trying. But that will not flatten the distorted record.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Not sure
