The cushion is made of very sturdy but pliable plastic. It comes with an air pump and two needles. I had a minor problem with inflating it—I had to push the needle really hard into the valve before it would inflate. When I did that, it felt as though the needle had to puncture a membrane inside the valve. Then everything worked fine. I notified the seller, who said they would pass the feedback along to their manufacturer.The cushion can be inflated anywhere from very soft to very firm, and it holds air very well. I normally use it for sitting, and it's very comfortable and does a nice job keeping me mindful of staying balanced. I haven't used it for any standing exercises. I'd buy it again without hesitation.
