Bought this Singer Sew Mate 5400 sewing machine in 2018. From the first use, the threads began to collect under the fabric. I read it over and over again. I was so upset that I put the sewing machine away. Started using again in 2019. Punch threads (bird's nest) under the fabric. STILL. Read many other reviews and watch many videos for the solution. I FINALLY found a blog post from a quilter with a Janome sewing machine. I thought why not try this on my Singer sewing machine. Her suggestion was to reverse the 'rotary arm' refill (on my car this is step #4 in refilling the car). Instead of threading right to left, thread left to right and continue threading as directed. It doesn't look right, but it works for now. Changing just this ONE thing cured my problem. Seems to provide enough tension to stop a "bird's nest" (a term I learned while trying to figure out a solution). So far not a single thread has gotten tangled under my fabric. Hope this helps some people having the same problem.
