Review on Oggi Perforated Stainless Colander Soft Grip by Mary Nelson

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Nice design but flimsy construction, difficult to clean.

It was just the size and shape I needed for use with a small pot and small portions. But the handle is spot welded with no mechanical connection. That said, there was nothing to hold onto the grip other than the spot welding itself, and the grip's extreme leverage quickly ripped the welds off. The photos show how metal fatigue caused one side of the handle to break off at the weld and the other side is beginning to break as well. The broken weld was either over the hole or the weld had created a hole just below the attachment point. After rinsing, all you had to do was gently shake off the water, and the handle broke. There were characteristic "ticks" as the weld gradually came loose over several weeks. Another major manufacturing flaw is the holes in the screen. It's all about the holes, but they appear to have been punched through, leaving thin, sharp, rough edges at each hole. Sponges and washcloths are easily torn and you can cut your fingers if you are not careful. When you consider how hard it is to clean something with hundreds of holes, those tiny jagged edges around each hole almost defeat the purpose of the tool and actually increase the risk of injury. In the kitchen you have to be careful with knives and sharp objects, but you shouldn't be particularly careful with a colander! The handle broke for over a year, but that longevity was due to my early realization that the handle attachment would be the first point of failure. So I can't return it and I don't expect to in a year, but this product and its maker aren't on my short list of quality kitchen tools. I gave an extra star for the form factor design, which is great but ultimately pretty useless.
