This is a basic rice cooker, so it does exactly what you would expect it to do: cook rice and then set it to "keep warm" until you turn it off. As another (and brilliant) reviewer suggested, I also bought a wall switch so I don't have to unplug it. Since it lives on my counter (95% of the time it's rice), I needed a workhorse that was easy to use, easy to clean, and just the right size (3 cups in my case). white, brown, and short grains, and they all cook very well), I rinse them first, let them warm for 30 minutes, and then flip the switch to cook them. Never had a splash problem. Be sure to fluff the rice once it's done if you don't want the bottom layer to brown. Shaking the rice a little each time you take it out can prevent the browning and wet spots that can easily happen if you leave it alone. If I want rice with anything other than water, I cook the rice and then add the ingredients - anything else has historically worn away the nonstick coating. As for cleaning, I only hand wash with the soft side. Sponges in a bowl. I know it says you can wash it in the dishwasher, but the harshness can destroy the non-stick coating and the thermal stress can cause the lid to crack. Never had a problem with this or my previous rice cooker. My only issue with this rice cooker is that it needs to be stirred regularly to keep wet spots from forming. In an ideal world, I could easily leave it warm overnight, but it's under $30 so can't complain. If you want something very cheap, reasonably sized and able to cook rice, this is a good choice.
