I've tried many filter removal tools over the years with varying degrees of success. Lately I've been driving small cars with tiny filters that have a hard time finding the right size plugs for them and even then they don't seem to hold up very well. On two of my cars, the filter sat right in the gap between the exhaust manifold branches. Lots of burnt fingers trying to work in tight spaces with wrenches. It was effortless. I'm not sure how well they perform with constant heavy use (buy more than one?), but for a few oil changes a year they're worth the money.
