MacBook over USB-C is dangerous

I love the monitor. I bought two matching tables for my wife and I. In my case, I used side-by-side mode to split the screen between my Windows PC via HDMI and my work MacBook via USB-C. It was a great setup and the monitor even charged my MacBook using the same cable. After a few months, the left half of the monitor, powered by the USB-C connection, started flickering and eventually turned off completely. Switching to a different port on the MacBook started it up again, but that first USB-C port no longer controls the monitor. Two weeks later after I connected a working MacBook to a monitor, the laptop went black and couldn't be revived. This monitor turned my work laptop into a brick and Apple has confirmed that it needs a complete replacement. Now, with USB-C and the ability to power devices while sending a video signal the other way, a faulty power supply in a monitor can hurt your computer. Samsung is checking the monitor under warranty, but I'm definitely not going to be using a direct USB-C to USB-C connection with my new laptop when I get the monitor back. UPDATE: The warranty process was a mess too. I was given a prepaid label to send the monitor in for repair (luckily I kept the huge box just in case) and 6 days into the 5-7 day repair time was told they had no parts or a monitor replacement. instead they refund my money. I'm still waiting for verification and now I have to buy another monitor.

Pros
  • 3-year business with extended warranty available for purchase, TAA compliant for federal government customers
Cons
  • long time
