The size (1-1/4", 1-1/2", etc.) refers to the inside diameter of the pipe, not the outside diameter. The wall thickness of Schedule 40 PVC pipe significantly increases the overall diameter of the pipe. These couplings are designed and sized for the outside of PVC pipe so that their inside diameter is larger than the specified dimensions. To find out what size to order, simply look at the information printed on the whistle itself. For example, if you have two lengths of 1-1/2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe that need to be joined, order a 1-1/2" coupler and you're done.
