Sturdy, but order one size larger.
I think most debaters have a small waist. The length is perfect for my son, he just turned 5 and needs a size 7r. He's a big boy, not heavy, just taller than most kids his age. Size 7 fits him. I love the durability of these jeans, they hold up really well. Wranglers are his absolute favourite, I have a hard time getting him to wear any other pair of jeans.
