Shop Fox mini lathe is my first lathe purchase. It was easy to assemble and the instructions were simple. There is a short tutorial on shooting in the manual, but I suggest watching some shooting videos online before you start. You'll also need turning tools (do yourself a favor and sharpen the tools before use). I bought the set for about $80 which is a good start. You'll also need to buy something to sharpen your tools if you don't already have them. After using Shop Fox to flip a pair of items, it is stable and balanced. 1/3 hp motor suitable for small machines of this size. Flipping the pen is no problem. I spun a bit apitong and stopped the spin, but that was my own inexperience with the job. For more intensive use, you need to attach the lathe to your workbench. All in all it was a good buy.
