A great and reliable coffee maker that keeps your coffee hot but doesn't scorch; DO NOT wash with dish soap

I bought the exact same coffee maker about ten years ago and made the mistake of advising someone to wash it with dish soap and run a cleaning cycle. This damaged the metal part underneath where the percolator spindle rests and the metal started to chip off in the coffee. I stopped using it because I was afraid of getting poisoned and figured that at some point I would try to find parts to replace this part. Eventually I broke down and just bought another pot. It's the exact same pot I had before and it works the same way. I read somewhere that coffee machines burn coffee, so this time I tried to measure the temperature of the water both immediately after it leaked and after a while. Once I was able to remove the lid after hitting it, which meant the water had cooled a bit, my reading was 188 degrees Fahrenheit and then hovered around 186 degrees. This seems correct to me because I believe the water is probably seeping through the area at a slightly higher temperature, but not by much. Coffee websites recommend brewing between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit, so that's pretty damn close to what you don't have to deal with. with coffee grounds in my coffee. The first few cups of coffee I made in it (after rinsing the cup per instructions, of course) didn't taste very good, and then it dawned on me that they might have been bleached filters. I have the screen from my little used 32-ots. French press in the basket instead (perfect!), and the taste issue was gone, so it must have been. two of us drink two full cups of coffee in the morning. With the 1 scoop 2 cups method, adding 1 per pot, the strength of the coffee is just right for us. (I use an 1/8 cup scoop, which equals 1 ounce, or 2 flat tablespoons.) After we've finished our coffee, I immediately pour out the coffee grounds and rinse the coffee pot, then let it dry disassembled for a day. In the evenings I prepare the pot for the next morning which is on the timer so it will be ready when we wake up. But it doesn't take long to revive the pot; Pay about a minute per cup.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Overall ok but...
