Simply slide the tool under the cover around the latch and gently tilt the tool to release the latch - no stress on the canvas or the latch. Good size handle, easy to use. Wrap the cord around your wrist to prevent the instrument from falling, especially in water! It's a good idea to add a floating keychain to this thing in case you drop it - it doesn't float. An expensive tool but worth it compared to latch and canvas repairs. We have been very happy with this tool for over 5 years, it still looks brand new even after a long time of use.
