Lots of plastic tie sticking out

The rope is thin, strong and my mice enjoy climbing, but was there a lot of sticky plastic on the ends that seems to be holding the rope in place? The tape/sticky plastic is not intended to be swallowed, so I was concerned about this hazard. After cutting the plastic, the metal rod stuck out in the middle of the rope, creating another hazard. I had to play with the rope for an hour or two before I felt it was safe for my mice :(
