I bought a standard air intake for my 2000 Tahoe that came with a choice of red or blue cone filter (careful!). All of the common components are comparable to the K&N CAI kits I have on two other Chevy trucks, except for the filter. I ended up ordering a K&N filter for installation and was glad I did. I removed the standard CAI cone filter and it was dirty and black. The K&N slides seamlessly onto the mass air flow adapter and fits perfectly into the heat shield. A closer look at the standard filter turned out that it was not dirty, and the blue filter fell apart and got into the engine. Then I disassembled the system, cleaned the MAF, throttle body, lines and spilled sea foam down the intake manifold as the little blue particles covered everything. Do not use generic filters! I've never had this problem with K&N filters, but they need to be properly conditioned after cleaning.
