These gloves are like a wetsuit for your hands - they won't keep your hands dry but they will keep you warm for cold water sports like fall swimming. I used them today in 45 degree air and 60 degree water and they make end of season swimming that much more comfortable. They would be useful for water sports such as kayaking or surfing, but are not recommended for sailing where lines must be handled as they are made of thin neoprene (like a wetsuit) so are not abrasion resistant. The fit is good and I'm happy for the price.
