When you connect a USB audio adapter for the first time, it takes a while for the computer to recognize it (Windows 7). Once that happened I had to go into the control panel, select "Sound" and set the default USB sound adapter which showed up as the speaker icon. Then when you plug it in, it automatically switches from my desktop speakers to the USB audio adapter, and when it's unplugged it goes back to the desktop speakers. In terms of performance, it works very well. The sound/music is very clear with no distortion. I have another old USB audio adapter that works but has a very "tinny" sound with a constant "thorn" in the background.
