I've used all kinds of hay holders and even just throwing them on the cage floor and I always make a mess. It's not the result of what container I put it in. This is because the hay gets messy when you take it out of the bag. out. If you have a big sack of hay, you can stuff it in the sack. Otherwise sprinkle it over a trash can or on a table or anywhere hay doesn't mind or you can easily clean it up. Before this hay holder I used a hay bale in making products and I am much happier with this roll the hay holder. I can't comment on the door not closing as I only received the item yesterday.
