Review on Canon EF S 24MM 1 2 8 STM by Jermaine Krishnamoorthy

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Solid build, sharp photos, great wide-angle lens

I mainly use it for shooting stars at night. The lens is simple (24mm fixed focal length), fast (f/2.8) and delivers the very precise image needed to capture the subtle variations in the stars. Although I don't use the autofocus at night, the autofocus performed very well in tests I ran during the day. The first two photos I've attached haven't undergone any post-processing. Post-processing removed some smudges between the stars in the night shot. Stains are caused by noise in the camera due to long exposure times (2 seconds) and high ISO settings (12800). Day shot with auto focus on and other automatic settings. The third shot includes post-processing, but you won't get a good end product if you don't start with good images. Well, with all that said, I also did some very thorough wide open lens testing of this lens. , at f/2.8. The tests used an array of very small white dots on a black background. I found very little chromatic aberration anywhere and a combination of coma and astigmatism at the edges of the image. In other words, I wouldn't use this lens to create poster-sized images with lots of fine detail around the edges. Not that big of a surprise for such a simple lens design, but you get what you pay for. Therefore, no lens is perfect, and this lens, like any other, has its own characteristics. But the field was flat, there was little distortion and (IMHO) for the price it was great.

Pros
  • Wide-angle lens for Canon APS-C cameras (38mm equivalent of a full-frame camera)
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
