Review on Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens - Fixed Black (6310B002) for US Cameras by Jasmit Singh ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

My impression of the purchase is good, buy it.

If you, having a full-frame camera, are not ready to put up with the quality and / or size of zooms, then this is your choice: a staffer for every day - bright, not too narrow, quite frisky, with low distortion and sharpness. You can shoot a small event even in the apartment, and it will always go into the bag as an additional one. However, if you already have a focal length of 35-50 mm, even if it’s not USM, then I don’t see the point of having this one either. And is it worth mentioning that, if you are fond of portrait/landscape/sports or any other specific shooting, you will most likely need a second glass . I noticed one feature: even on 6D it looks quite harmonious in size - a sort of compact is obtained, and, as a result, the attitude of others changes: there is no increased interest and stupid standard questions - you leave the category "professional photographer" . Of course, if you take money, then this is a minus (like a businessman in torn shoes), but shooting non-staged shots is a pleasure: to a certain extent, they do not pay attention to you, which eliminates posing and possible discontent. : after half a year of use, I would like to add: autofocus does not cause any complaints and the speed in practice turned out to be more than high due to tenacity, and a slight level of distortion puts the lens head and shoulders above 35 and 50 mm counterparts (according to reviews, almost twice ), which, unfortunately, cannot be said about aperture, which you often want more. Conclusion: my favorite lens, which allows you to shoot both a group of people and a facial portrait, but obliges you to have something fast for creative ideas. I applaud the engineers and marketers and wait for the Sigma 50 / 1.4 Art, which I feel will replace both my 40 and 85 mm glasses, but this is a completely different story / price .

Pros
  • The question of whether to take a camera with you is no longer; Tenacious and accurate autofocus, a little slower than the older fifty dollars, but much faster than the younger one, and even without nuts in the bokeh; Worth every spent on it.
Cons
  • I would like internal focusing, more aperture, faster autofocus, but, I repeat, the price is more than adequate and these are nit-picking that do not affect the result!
