I just wanted to test the Viewsonic 3D DLP Link glasses but thought I'd also share some of the things I had to do to set up my system for 3D display material. I have a 2008 Mitsubishi WD 65735 DLP TV. There are several options for viewing 3D programs, each requiring a different type of setup. The 3D TVs that Mitsubishi sold in 2008 (and a few other years) require the 3D signal to be formatted in what is known as a "checkerboard" format. This is one of three or four different ways to format 3D video. I wanted to be able to watch 3D video provided by both my cable provider (Brighthouse) and as well as 3D video, which is gradually becoming available on Blu-ray discs. Unfortunately, this required two different approaches to make the 3D source material compatible with the checkerboard format required by my Mitsubishi.1 TV. The easy part is 3D video over Blu-Ray discs: In order to watch Blu-Ray discs on my Mitsubishi DLP model TV, I needed a 3D-capable Blu-Ray player that would output the 3D checkerboard signal, that my Mitsubishi needed. Panasonic makes three models of players that specifically support this format (BDT 350, BDT 300 and BDT 100, as well as its private model variants like BDT 105 and BDT 107. I chose the BDT 100 because it was the cheapest and always yet to find was all i need to connect. To set up the components to display 3D video, all I had to do was connect the player via HDMI, set Mitsubishi to 3D mode in the setup menu, and set the Panasonic player to output checkerboard 3D via the setup menu. . If you are using Viewsonic 3D glasses, you can set the polarity to normal or reverse in the 3D TV setup menu, as these glasses can change the polarity by simply pressing the power button after you turn them on switched on and watched. 3D image. You can tell which mode is correct by looking at the picture. If the polarity is set incorrectly, the 3D image will appear flat and a little washed out. Just press the power button on the glasses a few times and see what looks best. This will be pretty obvious (NOTE: I found it very important to set Mitsubishi to 3D mode BEFORE selecting the HDMI input that the BluRay player is connected to the TV or before turning on the player. This is because the Blu-ray player communicates with the TV to determine if it (the TV) can play 3D videos. If this communication occurs before you switch the TV to 3D mode, the player assumes that the TV cannot display 3D images and only plays 2D videos. In this case, turn off the player, set the TV to 3D mode, and then turn on the player again so that the "handshake" between them occurs again. (You don't want to put your TV in 3D mode and leave it there, because when viewing 2D source content on a TV in 3D, the picture looks washed out and less bright. ) Once this is all done, start the video, turn on the glasses, check the polarity and you will enjoy a great 3D video. Viewsonic glasses do not require an external transmitter as the glasses automatically sync to the TV using the flash of light generated by the TV. This is what "DLP Link" technology does and why these glasses only work with DLP TV. 2. The harder part is watching 3D video over cable: Although my cable provider offers a limited selection of 3D video, the format in which the signal is transmitted is not the checkerboard format required by the Mitsubishi TV. To view this content, I had to purchase a $99 Mitsubishi 3DA-1 adapter. This adapter converts many other types of 3D signals into the checkerboard format required by the TV. I did not purchase the Mitsubishi starter pack (which also includes 2 glasses) as the starter pack of 2 glasses was more expensive than buying an adapter and 3 pairs of Viewsonic glasses. In addition, the starter pack does not use DLP-Link technology for glasses. It uses "active 3D glasses" which require a separate emitter (which is included in the starter pack). While there are pros and cons to different approaches, I chose the DLP-Link approach because it is not possible to turn off the DLP-Link flash on a Mitsubishi TV. This flash of light is not visible when wearing DLP Link glasses, however, it has been reported that using active 3D glasses (which do not require this flash) causes the resulting image to look blurry. tricky to hook up, but certainly harder to get working properly than a Blu-ray player. This is because you need to set up an adapter for the specific format that your source material is provided in (which may vary by service provider) so that it properly decodes into the checkerboard format that the TV requires. However, once you've got it set up and up and running, the 3D image quality is superb too. This was supposed to be a review of the goggles, so here it is: the goggles work great. They are very comfortable and work over regular glasses. Although a 3D image is always less bright than a comparable 2D image, I don't find the dimming entirely unacceptable. The 3D picture is as good as in the cinema. These glasses have a few disadvantages. First, you can dim or remove any lighting behind you, as this can create annoying reflections in the glasses. Second, these glasses are not rechargeable. The glasses come with a second set of batteries, but since they are button cells, you can't just swap out the batteries with the batteries you have at home. The batteries should last around 70 hours, but I haven't had my glasses long enough to be sure. However, the glasses turn off automatically, which should improve battery life. Also, DLP-Link glasses tend to To show a so-called "rainbow" effect when viewing a light background. I did notice this effect in a few scenes, but it didn't distract me much, and if I hadn't been looking for it I might not have noticed. Finally "Industrial Goggles" (the instructions mention that they are used in class). While this can make them durable, it also doesn't fold like regular glasses, making them difficult to store. In general I am very happy with them. They are among the cheapest 3D glasses and work as advertised. I will buy a few more sets to enjoy 3D movies in the company.
