I use well water and this was necessary. I made the connection with PEX, but copper/PVC isn't a problem either. I would recommend installing as close to the supply point as possible so you don't get debris in water heaters or other appliances/faucets. I would also recommend check valves near the inlet and outlet for filter changes. The only issue I had was a small amount of water leaking around the threads when first installed. I disassembled it and used teflon impregnation for pipes. After that there is no more leakage. Apart from a small leak there were no problems.
