The lid is worth the money. It's big enough to cover even big bikes and has two straps to keep it in place. The straps go around the bottom of the case, but not enough to keep the case from blowing up at five to 10 mph. I used two more straps to wrap around the lid and that more or less holds it in place. It appears to be waterproof but I don't know about direct heavy rain. I use it under a patio cover, but in the Pacific Northwest. So far, with additional straps, the case has withstood storms of up to 30 km/h and heavy side rain, although the bike capsized due to the case's sail area. Neither the bike nor the suitcase were damaged.
