These ceramic sharpening rods are the SECOND STEP of the three step sharpening process I use and I always keep my knife collection up to date. The FIRST STEP (for a used dull knife) is a metal sharpening rod, just like with a set of kitchen knives. This ceramic stick is the second step, and STEP THREE is a leather strap with a fine polishing compound. Talk about sharpness! It's a bit unusual, but this is how I use my ceramic sticks: 20 strokes diagonally forward and 20 backwards. Then 19 gone, 19 back. up to 2 sides, 2 spines, then 2 sides, 2 spines (20 times). Then 1 side swipe, 1 back 20 times. Finish off with a few wipes of blush. I have bought several from this company. They've always arrived well packaged, and while the sticks can be a little fragile (they're ceramic, after all), I've never broken a single one in transit. A very effective grinding tool. Easily washable with warm soapy water. Great tool! -Nater
