Essential with hand tools

Quickly sharpen your knives for shaving (although they won't break hair). Metal honing rod. However, it is not aggressive enough to create a new profile. It clogs up fairly quickly and requires frequent cleaning for best performance. Bartender's Friend seems to work well for cleaning, a magic sponge or eraser should work too. This can be inconvenient and a bit dangerous as it doesn't have a handle. Lansky has one with a $9 pen, but I haven't tested it (although reviews are good)

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

When the edge of my blade is really worn, I use the Lansky Blade Medic (preinstalled carbide guides allow the blade to be reshaped at a 30 degree angle after four to ten passes through the carbide guides). I then use an Arkansas 8 1/2" ceramic rod to make the serrated blade edge, which carbide guides make…
