Standard immersion heaters sold in the US are 4 1/2" tall but this unit is 6 1/2" tall. So if you put it in the standard 12 oz size. Mug for heating 8 oz. water, it's a bit too long to attach to the side of the cup and so the bottom of the device rests on the bottom of the cup. This device took six minutes to deposit 8 ounces. Bringing tap water to a boil, standard units sold here in the US (also 300 watts) only takes 4 1/2 minutes to do the same. The coil element on this unit is 3/16" in diameter while the standard units sold here in the US use a 1/4" diameter coil element. I love the fact that this unit comes with a 240 volt plug adapter, although I haven't had a chance to test the unit in a 240 volt outlet outside of the US.
