My old desktop computer had slots for various memory cards and it was MUCH easier to remove the memory card from my Canon Powershot than to connect a cable. My laptop doesn't have this feature and I lost the camera cable. This reader connects via a short mini USB connector using a standard USB cable that is included in the box. You can't use a cable from your mobile phone - it's a micro USB, not a mini USB. They're similar enough in size and shape that I'm sure people will mess up devices by trying to plug the wrong cable into the jack. My advice: never unplug the cable from the card reader. My camera has a mechanism that keeps the memory card secure. This device does not have this. It takes a little practice to get the card in the right slot correctly, but the computer will tell you when it's right. I don't know if it's more secure, but I plug in the card and then connect the cable to the computer. This allows me to use the reader once every few weeks and I'm glad I didn't spend more than that on a card reader or buy a new cable for the camera. I wondered if I would regret this purchase, but it turned out to be EXACTLY what I needed.
