More novelty than functionality

I got this out of a general interest in art, including pen drawing. I have experience with pencils and other types of pen drawing, but I have never used a pen and wanted to try it. TL; DR - This set is good for looks/atmosphere, casual signature, gift, desk toy etc - ie "novelty" use. The drawing or writing tool is a bit disappointing. The handle looks really great. The steampunk details look good and are well finished. The nib felt surprisingly durable, and I love the pops of color on it, which give it an overall cool aesthetic (if that's your thing). The main speaker feels comfortable and has the thickness of the metal. I also give a few points for the cool look of some feathers and the presentation/storage box. They also provide you with everything you need to get started, except for paper, which I'm sure you already have. There are no instructions but searching the internet will bring up lots of videos and things that can help you. It's pretty simple, but there's a learning curve. And remember that some nibs (such as those with flat nibs used in calligraphy) require a little more pressure to work than sharper ones. I think the quality of the springs is ok but could be a little better. I also recommend rubbing alcohol on them before first use (and after use to remove the ink). The ink doesn't have droppers in the jars, but they do have good rubber stoppers under the lids. The glasses are so small that you can simply dip them in. Some inks performed better than others when it came to bleeding. Red and blue in particular differ slightly from each other. My biggest issue with this set is that the decorative elements, particularly this bottom sprocket, make it very difficult to hold the grip comfortably. You have to get the choke really close to the pen to erase it, which makes drawing or writing very difficult and awkward. I have rather small hands for a grown man and there is simply not enough space. So I have mixed feelings about this set. I was so interested in the pen drawing that I could have found something more ergonomic. If looks are your primary concern, then this is a cool set.

Pros
  • Calligraphy Pens
Cons
  • Something different
