Metal thick enough to support a lot of weight. The part that keeps the wheel from turning on the shaft that wraps around the frame had to be modified to make the frame out of round, but I can't blame the manufacturer for that. I doubt anyone has a welding machine to do what I did, but it works fine with my modification of the part to enlarge the hole between the "fingers". If you have a frame (the part just in front of the rear wheel mount, parallel to the ground) that is no larger than 7/8" you should be fine. Good, durable product. On a 16 inch bike with a 50 pound kid.
