Review on ๐ŸŽฌ Immerse in Stunning 1080p Visuals with the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc Player by Daniel Aboubakar

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A year later Problems with BDP-300

My original rating (4 stars) in October 2007 matched others I've seen. quiet, looks good and the picture quality of the Blu-ray DVD is excellent. This compensates for some inconveniences and limitations that I didn't expect from a 3rd generation product: 1. very slow loading time. The manual mentions that times improve once you've done and saved the initial setup. I did and they do but not very noticeable. Maybe I should try af /w upgrade.2. When playing older (normal) DVDs, the picture sometimes freezes, especially with some cheaper products such as B. School children's things.3. Doesn't play older VCDs, DVD-Rs, PALs etc at all. I ended up buying an Oppo DV-981HD upconverter and unlocked it to do everything else. While the guide is generally helpful, it's not detailed enough: I still can't figure out how to enable subtitles! Overall I was (WAS) satisfied with this product. ------- New rating, 08/05/2008 (up to 1 star, cannot be changed) ------- I bought the S300 in July 2007 and was very satisfied at first - great picture, a bit slow , but it was ok. This week in August 2008 I had problems with 2 discs: one stopped and jerked, the other didn't play all chapters. After debating whether I had received 2 faulty discs from Netflix at the same time, I thought that the newer discs might need firmware updates. I found this on Google: [.] I checked the player, it was Rev 2.00 from the factory. Thinking newer should obviously be better - yes - I downloaded version 3.95 and updated today (8-4-2008). After the update, I checked version 3.95 in the system menu. After updating to version 3.95, the player became very picky about what it will and won't play: 1. Glory Road (Netflix) downloads and launches at any time, I haven't played it fully yet.2. National Treasure II (Hollywood Video) boots after several attempts and error messages that the disc cannot be played. Let's see if v 3.95 managed to get rid of the audio and video stuttering I was having before the update. So far so good.3. BBC Galapagos (Netflix): Download once and play. Now that is no more. Several attempts ended with "Unable to play disc". The device gets one star because if the disc boots successfully, the picture still looks good. But this nonsense with f/w upgrades is very discouraging. BR may have won the war, but it's not ready for prime time.

Pros
  • BRAVIA Theater Sync (HDMI-CEC)
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than others
