Review on Enhanced Netgear MR314 Wireless Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch for Improved 802.11b Connectivity by Steve Snyder

Good choice for beginners and experts

As an advanced user, I can't comment on the default configuration of this router, but based on my observations and feedback from others, it should be easy, depending on the specifics of your ISP and yours firewall software used. In this regard, it's a good choice for a beginner, but the advanced features of this router (particularly full 128-bit encryption) make it very attractive for an expert. However, a beginner will need help to use these features as the printed documentation doesn't cover them at all and the pdf and doc files on the included CD barely touch them. Unfortunately, while the 128-bit encryption is a boon for security-conscious users, the router doesn't rotate its keys, requiring the user to do so manually on a schedule they see fit. To do this, you must change the key on each client in the network at the same time. If required, the router provides four keys with 40-bit encryption. (TIP: First define the key in the NIC setup utility on the client computer - have your key converted to hexadecimal and then enter those hexadecimal numbers into the key definition on the router). Signal through multiple walls while staying within 100 feet. However, I did not have the opportunity to test it on different floors of the house. The bandwidth was almost identical to the physical connection to the network. Verdict: Great feature set (for now, right?), reasonable price (discounted), built to last. More detailed instructions and explanations could be offered, but most beginners have neighbors or children who can help them install and use advanced features. (NOTE: These comments reflect my use of the NETGEAR MA401 wireless network card in combination with the MR314.) CHANGE THE DEFAULT ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD ON THE ROUTER DURING SETUP.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Too stupid
