I read the reviews before buying and a lot of people said it ran small so I bought the XL. My horse is 15.2 about 1200 lbs, maybe a little above average chest and it fits. The only place that was questionable was the girth range, I don't think it would fit in an L as its girth maxed out with an XL and it's still tight (wish it was a little larger). The color is more purple. I got the hood because my horse had a pretty bad cut/neck wound and I needed something to protect him and keep bugs out (I live in central Texas so I need something that doesn't make him sweat too much ). or). So far it has worked well for that. Some dirt can get in, but most of it gets trapped. I like that it has a zipper under the chin and up to the middle of the neck; allows for easy retraction to clean the wound without completely removing the hood. I've only been using it for a few days, but so far I like it. Could use it under the covers in winter.
