I've been using Linux since 2000. One thing that doesn't work well with Linux is PCI/MOBO modems. The first thing people always do when they start using Linux is get an external modem. The first one I ever received was USRobotics. Quite expensive and it worked right out of the box. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 4 months! Bought another, exactly the same model. He died again 5 months later. I started looking for external modems and settled on a ZOOM external modem. I had the same ZOOM modem when I was 11. The only thing that went wrong with it is that the power button broke and doesn't stay pressed when it's on, so I sealed it and it's still working. Now that MOBOs are moving away from serial/external modems and actively using USB, I've had to get a USB modem (my new MOBO *does* not even have a serial port on the back!). I wasn't sure what to expect from a USB tethering and Linux, but got this one as it was pretty cheap. I plugged it in, powered up the system, checked for a new modem and my Linux found it with no problems. I didn't need to add any drivers or anything! (By the way, I'm using openSUSE 11.3). What's really cool about this modem is that it says right on the box that it works with Linux, although almost anything that works with M$ and Mac will work on a Linux system, but M$ big companies pay for something that *NOT* print stuff like that because Linux is a competitor and can't afford to fight them. Bye! I use a modem when typing on my Linux. No problems so far and I hope it lasts as long as my old ZOOM external serial modem. As far as I know ZOOM is the best for this kind of stuff and again I am very happy with their products.
