Review on πŸ”’ OWC Mercury On-The-Go Portable 2.5" FW800/USB3.0 Enclosure Kit for SATA: Powerful Storage Solution in Compact Form by Joshua Coulter

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good build. Calm. Quickly.

After replacing my early 2011 MacBook Pro with a new SSD, I needed an enclosure for my old hard drive. Enclosures equipped with Thunderbolt were too expensive, so I looked for FireWire (FW) options and found this good 2.5 inch hard drive enclosure from OWC. It's almost entirely plastic, but feels pretty solid and I love the design, which is inspired by the old Mac G4. Adhesive feet raise the case just enough to dissipate heat from a huge heatsink attached to the underside of the hard drive tray. It's a bit larger than I expected, but the build quality is very good, it's quiet, and it plugs into the FW port on my aging MacBook Pro with no issues. Installing the hard drive wasn't a difficult task, but the plastic back panel is tight so I had to be careful when inserting it. It can be difficult to remove if I ever want to replace the drive. As expected, data transfer speeds are much faster with the FW, and the USB 3.0 support means I can use any laptop I plan to buy in the near future. The OWC includes the necessary cables, screws, foot pads and even a faux leather carry case. A #0 Phillips screwdriver is required for the screws. To be honest, I could really do without the case if it reduced the price a bit. But even with a new hard drive, it's still cheaper and offers more features than Thunderbolt-compatible cases I've seen. Overall I am happy with my purchase. Highly recommended!
