I received my TOM TOM 340S GPS last night. Before I list the pros and cons, let me first tell you why I chose this particular model. I have chosen to purchase standard updates and traffic updates instead of lifetime updates for the following: 1) the first lifetime update which is only valid for this specific device, it is NOT transferrable. I don't think anyone will use this GPS all their life :), new models are released frequently and I'm sure we would like to update them. 2) Do you really need lifetime updates next? Wondering when was the last time the roads changed radically, yes, you answered correctly - hardly. (and in this economy I don't expect any major roads to be built). When was the last time you bought a new road atlas? I think the worn pages say it's been a long time. Also, the POI search isn't very important to me - so as long as it doesn't include a new fast food restaurant, hotel, or gas station, etc., I don't mind. 3) Do you need traffic information? - I think it depends on where you live. If you often commute to work in big cities with traffic jams, then this feature may come in handy for you. But for a casual traveler like me, I'd rather stick to the main road and wait for traffic, then hit a few off-the-beaten-path country lanes. Also, traffic in Charlotte, NC, where I live, never gets that bad. Okay, so it mainly depends on your requirements; - lifetime map updates: if you have OCD to have the latest maps, spend extra money to buy this feature - traffic updates: really depends on where you live ------------ - ---- --------------------------------------------- ----- -------------------------------------------- - ----- - Now let's talk about some pros and cons: PROS: - Excellent quality plastic - Bright, clear display - Text-to-speech works great: Remember, for this to work, go for Susans Agree - Lane Assist works great - Lots of other great features to list CONS: - Touch screen isn't very responsive - you have to really try to apply pressure. Keep in mind that it's not an iPhone - it only has 2GB of internal storage and no expandable storage. So if future map updates go beyond that, you won't be able to upgrade. - USB 1.1: This means a SLOW transfer - it took about an hour and a half to download the map update - overall this is a great GPS for the money!
