Review on Dorman 751 649 Passenger Regulator Assembly by Jason Rodman

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Second time charm?

I have a 2012 Fiat 500C that I bought new 9 years ago. One day 2 years ago when the odometer read 16,000 miles I heard a pop as I opened the window and the glass fell on the door. I disassembled the door panel and saw that the plastic clip on the regulator holding the glass had broken off. I did a little research online and found out that this is a very common problem on Fiat 500. I decided to swap out both regulators and bought regulators (no name) advertising a new improved metal clip design. Installation was quite difficult as many parts had to be removed and reinstalled. I blew it all back thinking I'd never have to do it again. Not correct. It wasn't until 2 years later, with 20,000 miles on the clock, that the regulators had problems again. This time the controls hum/buzz and the windows barely move. I disassembled the door panels and found that the cable on each of them had come loose from the reel and wrapped around the spindle ten times, rendering it unusable. However, the metal clips were ok. I found the problem this time (which happened in winter) was that when the temperature was low the silicone grease on the window rails (inside the door) would clog and create a lot of friction to move the glass up and down. This time I chose Dorman products because of the warranty, even though they had plastic clips. I also decided to replace the window rails with new ones and lubricate them with Honda Shin-Etsu silicone grease. So far the windows work better than ever and the movement is buttery smooth. I keep my fingers crossed and I hope I never have to do that again.
