You can use this tape measure with or without the laser - it took a little fiddling with the laser to get the hang of it. I think if I didn't use it all the time I'd forget how to do it and I'd have to examine myself every time I got to it! The roulette wheel is so attractive that my children kept reaching out and playing with it, even though I repeatedly told them no. The tape is way longer than I need as I use it for small DIY projects and measuring furniture and fixtures. Hopefully it lasts a long time without replacement. The laser is more of a bonus for me and I always check for accuracy and am pleasantly surprised that it is ACCURATE!
