Like all external thermometers, this one reads glass temperature and not water temperature. After several weeks of comparisons with another digital thermometer used in the aquarium, I found that the water was about 0.5 degrees warmer than the glass reading. I would rate this as an accurate read. It's a bit larger and not as inconspicuous as I expected (due to my poor visual skills, not the company - their description is accurate), so I mounted mine on the side of the tank. Even there, my 60-year-old eyes can easily read the large numbers displayed. As this was one of the main reasons I made this purchase I am rating it 5 stars. I also rate JJMG 5 stars for their EXCEPTIONAL customer service. There was a problem with the device I received; They resolved it quickly and politely.
