Review on Garmin GPSMAP Waterproof Marine Chartplotter by Bryan Gilliam

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Needs technical update but did the job.

Looking for a quick alternative to a chartplotter for a recently bought boat, I chose this GPS solution. As a waterproof handheld, I can use it as a backup on my sailboat and also take it with me in the mud or when camping. However, it is extremely versatile. The display is quite small, the resolution is not very good. Navigation and destination entry are not very good. From a user interface perspective, it's not the easiest to use. It also lacks many water-based routing features. (It plots a direct course from place to target over land.) However, it is an intelligent reference and has the ability to obscure and jam the depths. Most of the time using a cell phone is probably better, but it got us out of trouble and helped us reach our destination on our first six-hour voyage in the Chesapeake Sea when we shipped the boat back in December. The route that allows us to view it later doesn't seem to offer any real analysis, to the point where it can only see the distance/speed between two points. Though Garmin has improved its chartplotters and even GPS watches over the years, they seem to be ignoring the wearable GPS line. It's also extremely disappointing that while the device does come with built-in charts, Garmin states that these cannot be used by ActiveCaptain (unlike the chartplotters that come with chartplotters, which are actually exactly the same charts). You need to buy new cards for this software which cost the same as this device.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Everything ok
